More than visual design, more than interactions.
We take pride in our craft. Drawing on our deep expertise in design, our Product Design team cares for your users’ experience over the entire customer journey, at every touchpoint with your company.
Building on the work of our Mobile Product Strategy team, we shepherd your product through the entire design process. We aim to achieve your strategic goals while delivering exceptional interactions with visual polish.
We also collaborate with our Software Engineering team to ensure our designs are technically feasible within the constraints of the project. At the same time, we’re watching for innovative new technologies that can make the experience more seamless.
Visual Design Principles
We have framed our 5 principles as questions to encourage all of us to constantly ask them of each other when presenting design work 1-on-1, and in our daily design critique sessions.
Is the design innovative?
Today, innovative design always develops in tandem with innovative technology. It is too much to ask for Tinder swipe level innovation on all products, but there is still so much you can do with gestures, navigation, haptics and transformation of content (vs linear, static flows). Take creative risks.
Is the visual design conceptually sound?
There should be a sound concept to the visual direction (not just looking good). Think about the supporting graphic elements and flourishes. There should be conceptual intent behind them. Always keep your Design Direction Workshop word cloud in mind throughout the visual design phase.
Is the design “timeless?”
Great design should still look and feel great for years. In the mobile software world, “years” may only mean 3 or 4. Trends can be powerful but try to avoid dribbble trends (I’m looking at you, colored diffused shadows) and focus on pure, classic visual design.
Is the visual design unique and distinctive to the client's brand?
This day and age, the digital experience for a client’s product has essentially become the product. It should be distinctively theirs. If you remove the logo, does it fall apart? Does it become a generic template?
Is the visual design system lightweight and cohesive?
“Good design is as little design as possible.”- Rams. If you are honest and intentional with your design system as you work through a product, it should be lightweight and cohesive. Thus, concentrating on essential aspects. The best way to verify this is with your design system.

Design systems are the key to constant iteration and evolution of a product. They promote a cohesive, lightweight user experience by defining not only patterns and styles but how designers use them appropriately. A good system is not just a collection of assets and components; it is the embodiment of a system of concepts.
Voice, Chatbots & Multimodal UI
Humans read at ~250 words per minute and speak at ~150 words per minute, but can only type at ~40 words per minute (in English). We all are on a never-ending quest to transmit data to our devices via speech and receive information visually on a screen. The increasing adoption of home assistants like Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri show a bright future for voice just around the corner. WillowTree champions deeply integrated text, voice, and screen-based experiences—which go by many names, including multimodal, immersive UX, and blended UX—to bring our clients into this new world of voice enablement.
